Lieutenant Colonel Brian Johnson is the Director at the Walter Reed Army Institute-West (WRAIR-West) which is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Boise State University, a Master of Science in experimental psychology from Kansas State University, and a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Texas Tech University. His doctorate program is accredited by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. LTC Johnson is an Eagle Scout.
LTC Johnson entered active duty service as a Naval Aerospace Experimental Psychologist in 2008. He earned his “wings of gold” in 2009 from the U.S. Navy upon completion of a 24-week course in aviation flight medicine from the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute in Pensacola, Florida.
His first assignment was in the Human Systems Division at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. In this acquisition assignment, LTC Johnson worked on Integrated Product Teams as a subject-matter expert ensuring that next-generation aviation systems were designed with the human operator in mind. His second assignment was in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In this teaching assignment, LTC Johnson taught seven different academic courses in behavioral science and was an Associate Investigator on a multi-year DoD-NCAA Concussion, Assessment, Research, & Education (CARE) Consortium with military academies and universities. This consortium was the result of President Obama’s White House Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit in order to understand the true nature of concussion.
In 2018, LTC Johnson interservice transferred from the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Army (with no break in service) so he could continue to provide brain health solutions for Service Members exposed to blunt and blast trauma. Upon completion of the DCC and BOLC, he was assigned to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland as a 71F Research Psychologist.
At WRAIR, LTC Johnson held several positions. Given is background in TBI, he was the Associate Branch Director for the Blast-Induced Neurotrauma Branch. LTC Johnson supported field blast research that delivered a cognitive biomarker for blast-induced exposure and developed a test plan for evaluating wearable blast sensors. Further, he was the Deputy Chief Science Officer supporting seven branches and provided training and regulatory support for all researchers within the Institute. His culminating assignment was as the Director for the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience.
Awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC) and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. He is a graduate from the Navy and Marine Corps School of Aviation Safety and the Naval War College. He is a member of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society, In 2016, he was the Outstanding Academy Educator at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
LTC Johnson is married to Kate Nell-Johnson. They have two school-aged children, Leo and Scarlet. |
